Since its opening in 2014, the gallery has been dedicated to shaping a vibrant artistic community enriched by cultural diversity and cross-cultural dialogue. It represents established contemporary artists with an institutional approach from Uruguay and Latin America (Brazil, Cuba, Mexico, Venezuela), as well as from all other continents (Denmark, Italy, Germany, Japan, Morocco, South Africa, Switzerland).
What unites these artists is a shared dedication to pushing the boundaries of their respective mediums. Often sculptural in nature, their works reflect an obsessive exploration of form, texture, and materiality. Architectural in their approach, they meticulously consider space and environment.
History
His journey was fueled by an early fascination with abstraction, sculpture and purity of forms. From this passion emerged a vision, a program that unites post-minimalism and conceptual sensibilities, with a distinct emphasis on sculptures and site-specific art.
In 2014, at the age of 27, Piero Atchugarry, opened his first gallery driven by a clear artistic vision and a desire to foster a dialogue between the land of his origins, Uruguay, and the global art scene.
In 2014, the inaugural gallery in Garzón unfolded within the heart of a traditional Uruguayan village, housed in an adapted 1950s stable. Located within the Garzón Sculpture Park, a sprawling 159-hectare reserve adorned with 15,500 native trees and shrubs, the gallery occupies a 1,450 sq. ft. space.
Garzon: A Hub for Art and Nature
The inaugural gallery has since evolved into an artist studio for our Artists-in-Residence program. Here, artists from across the globe immerse themselves in the richness of Uruguayan nature and connect with the authenticity of local culture.
Our first gallery in Tierra Garzón, located in the heart of the Garzón Sculpture Park, now converted into an art residency space.
In 2018, fueled by the desire to reach new horizons, Piero Atchugarry expanded the gallery's program to North America. He opened a second gallery near Miami's renowned Design District marking a significant chapter in our international presence.
The Miami gallery has two distinct spaces: the Gallery and the Survey Space. The Gallery hosts rotating solo and group exhibitions by represented artists, often curated by guest curators. Meanwhile, the Survey Space showcases significant solo and group exhibitions, emphasizing contemporary and emerging artists with an experimental program.
In 2019, Piero introduced the Gallery’s first ‘PA Takeover’ exhibition, a program of satellite exhibitions across the globe working outside the walls of the Piero Atchugarry Galleries to engage new audiences and communities. The first PA Takeover featured works by Túlio Pinto at Fondamenta Sant'Apollonia in Venice during the Biennale. Exhibiting nationally and internationally, the PA Takeovers are not traveling shows, but rather highly site-specific exhibitions. The program challenges the gallery’s represented artists to think on their feet, adapting and confronting new floor plans and sites. Each of these sites presents a unique history and architecture, which in turn brings about new associations between the viewer and the work. The diverse approach to exhibition design that the PA Takeover program encourages artists and spectators alike to have an ever-evolving relationship to art.
Expansion and International Reach
Our second and main gallery located north of The Miami Design District
In 2019 came the opening of 3rd gallery in the heart of Garzón, this time downtown—the Pueblo Garzón Gallery. Seasonally active, the gallery hosts a diverse program of group and solo exhibitions, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces to create immersive experiences for artists and audiences alike.
